The Francis William Bird Park is an 89-acre landscaped reserve in Walpole, Massachusetts, and commissioned in 1925 by the industrialist Charles Sumner Bird, Sr. in memory of his eldest son, Francis William Bird who died of pneumonia at age 37. Acton Arboretum This incredible place is one of the most undisturbed areas in Massachusetts, with plenty of trails, gardens, and tours available. Acton Arboretum contains a variety of natural areas, including swampland, woodlands, a glacial esker, grassy meadows, and an old apple orchard. Three major trails loop through the Acton Arboretum, including the 1,200-foot Orchard Loop, the 1,800-foot Wildflower Loop, and the 3,500-foot Highlands/Bog Loop. more The Orchard Loop is a perimeter loop that runs through the old orchard. It has very gentle grades, and it's accessible for people with disabilities. This trail also passes an herb garden, a butterfly garden, a plant nursery, and the Hosta Garden. The Wildflower Loop runs through swampy lowlands and upland forest. It passes through a wildflower garden and a fern garden, and it contains a brook crossing and many boardwalk paths. The Highlands/Bog Loop runs through the highest and lowest points in the arboretum. It covers some of this attraction's roughest terrain. It's open every day from an hour before sunrise to an hour after sunset. Auburndale Cove Auburndale Coveris one of the most peaceful parks in Massachusetts. Since winter in Boston has been known to be downright chilly, we sometimes run out of indoor activity ideas to stay entertained. That's why we've compiled a list of four inside activities you can do with your family or friends in Boston this winter. New England Aquarium If you're looking for a fun activity for the whole family, check out the New England Aquarium. The aquarium is located right on the water in downtown Boston. You'll have the chance to see thousands of aquatic animals, from the Atlantic Harbor Seal to the Southern Rockhopper Penguin. While at the aquarium, you can also visit the Simons IMAX Theater and enjoy one of several films displaying more of the world's creatures and wonders. During the winter, plan on visiting the New England Aquarium between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $31 per adult, $22 per child, and $29 per senior. Children ages 3 and younger are free. You can also purchase an aquarium membership if you plan on visiting multiple times throughout the year. Boston Children's Museum If you have younger children, another excellent place to visit is the Boston Children's Museum. The children's museum is located in downtown Boston and provides children with a safe, fun, and educational play space. When you visit the museum, you can experience several exhibits, such as the art lab, construction zone, and raceways. Plan to visit between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday through Thursday or between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Fridays. Admission is free for infants younger than 1 year and is $18 for all other children and accompanying adults. If you plan on visiting the Boston Children's Museum often throughout the year, you can also purchase a museum membership. more Rock Spot Climbing Whether you're a professional rock climber or have never climbed in your life, Rock Spot Climbing is an excellent place to visit in the winter in Boston. Rock Spot Climbing has two Boston locations, so whether you live near downtown or in South Boston, you can stop by for some active fun throughout the winter. All Rock Spot Climbing gyms are open from 10 a.m. to midnight every day. Day passes vary between the two Boston locations. They range from $14–$18 for children ages 6 and younger and seniors, $14–$18 for students and military members, and $16–$20 for everyone else. Gear is available to rent for an additional price, and you can also purchase a membership if you plan on climbing frequently throughout the winter. Room Escapers Boston If you want to keep your mind active during the winter, get a group together and head to one of the two Room Escapers locations in Boston. While many escape rooms have you work with your team to get out of a locked room, Room Escapers has you going on missions to break into things instead. With winter in full swing in the Boston area, it's time to pull out sweaters and scarves. Seasonal ice skating rinks are also open this time of year, so make the most of the icy weather by going ice skating with family and friends. Keep reading to learn where you can go ice skating in Boston this winter. The Boston Common Frog Pond Considered one of the best ice skating rinks in the United States, the Boston Common Frog Pond is an excellent place to stretch out your legs during the winter. Ice skating opens to the public in November and closes in March. The rink is open Monday from 10 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The rink may be closed or experience limited hours on holidays, as is the case with most seasonal rinks. Admission varies according to each skater's height. If you're shorter than 58 inches, admission is free; if you're 58 inches or taller, admission is $6. Available skate rental at the rink is $12 for adults and $6 for kids. If you plan on skating at the rink multiple times during the winter, you can purchase a season pass. Community Ice Skating at Kendall Square Another excellent place to go ice skating in Boston is Community Ice Skating at Kendall Square. The ice rink is open from mid-December through mid-March. You can plan on skating at the rink on Monday from noon to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday from noon to 8 p.m., Friday from noon to 9 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. more Admission and skate rentals vary by age. A one-day admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students, and $1 for children ages 13 and younger. Skate rental is $8 for all adults and $5 for children ages 13 and younger. You can also purchase a season pass if you plan on skating several times throughout the winter season. You can also purchase hot drinks and snacks at the snack bar. Steriti Memorial Rink If you would like to go to an indoor ice rink, check out the Steriti Memorial Rink. The facility opens mid-November and closes mid-March; however, public skating doesn't open until late-November. You can stop by the rink to skate on Monday and Tuesday from noon to 2:20 p.m., Wednesday from noon to 2:50 p.m., Thursday from noon to 2:20 p.m., Friday from noon to 3:50 p.m. and from 7–9:50 p.m., Saturday from 4–9:50 p.m. and Sunday from 3–6:50 p.m. Admission is free to the public. You can bring your own skates or plan on renting skates for $5. One of the highlights of the Steriti Memorial Rink is its spectacular view of the harbor from the rink.
