Boston's Museum of Science is known for transforming relationships with science and technology through fun, interactive displays. Here are just a few things you can look forward to when visiting the Museum of Science in Boston. Exhibits The Museum of Science has many permanent and temporary exhibits that you explore when you visit. One of their permanent exhibits is A Bird's World. This exhibit features an astonishing collection of over 300 mounted species of birds found in New England. The exhibit's interactive activities will teach you how to improve your wildlife observation skills and learn how to recognize different bird behaviors. You can test how sneaky you are by trying to get past various birds without them alerting other animals to your presence. You'll also enjoy studying different flight patterns that will help you identify birds from a distance, as well as developing your own flight pattern in the exhibit's Bird Walk. more The Discovery Center is another fun and permanent exhibit designed for babies and children up to 8 years old. The teaching staff utilizes real objects and tools for each age to teach hands-on science, math, and engineering in a fun and creative way. Kids will enjoy putting together a skeleton, handling real fossils, and studying live animals. The Discovery Center includes an experiment station where various science experiments and engineering challenges are taught. Thrill Ride 360 The Thrill Ride 360 will take you on a simulated ride with full-motion, 360-degree pitch, roll, and spin technology. You can design your own roller coaster and then enjoy a thrilling ride while traveling at record speed and experiencing a drop of over 100 feet. If you've always loved the idea of flying, you'll love hopping into the pilot's seat and practicing your takeoff and landing skills and flying over famous landmarks throughout Boston. IMAX Films The museums Mugar Omni Theater features the world's largest film format projected onto a five-story IMAX dome screen. You'll be surrounded by breathtaking images of fauna, flora, and far-off landscapes. With the top-notch digital sound system, it will feel as though you're sitting out in the middle of nature rather than in a theater. A couple of IMAX films that are shown here include Great Bear Rainforest and National Parks Adventure. You'll travel to the land of grizzly bears, sea otters, and the unique, all-white spirit bear in the Great Bear Rainforest, while National Parks Adventure will take you off-trail and through the world's most beautiful outdoor and wilderness landscapes. Butterfly Garden The museums butterfly garden overlooks the Charles River as you walk through a warm conservatory filled with free-flying butterflies and exotic plants. You can take a look at the emergence box to witness the metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly. If the timing is right, you might even see a brand-new butterfly leaving its casing or a fresh adult pumping fluid into its wings. You'll also learn about the different stages of a butterfly's life cycle and the ways a butterfly's colors and patterns can offer it protection. Since winter in Boston has been known to be downright chilly, we sometimes run out of indoor activity ideas to stay entertained. That's why we've compiled a list of four inside activities you can do with your family or friends in Boston this winter. New England Aquarium If you're looking for a fun activity for the whole family, check out the New England Aquarium. The aquarium is located right on the water in downtown Boston. You'll have the chance to see thousands of aquatic animals, from the Atlantic Harbor Seal to the Southern Rockhopper Penguin. While at the aquarium, you can also visit the Simons IMAX Theater and enjoy one of several films displaying more of the world's creatures and wonders. During the winter, plan on visiting the New England Aquarium between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $31 per adult, $22 per child, and $29 per senior. Children ages 3 and younger are free. You can also purchase an aquarium membership if you plan on visiting multiple times throughout the year. Boston Children's Museum If you have younger children, another excellent place to visit is the Boston Children's Museum. The children's museum is located in downtown Boston and provides children with a safe, fun, and educational play space. When you visit the museum, you can experience several exhibits, such as the art lab, construction zone, and raceways. Plan to visit between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday through Thursday or between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Fridays. Admission is free for infants younger than 1 year and is $18 for all other children and accompanying adults. If you plan on visiting the Boston Children's Museum often throughout the year, you can also purchase a museum membership. more Rock Spot Climbing Whether you're a professional rock climber or have never climbed in your life, Rock Spot Climbing is an excellent place to visit in the winter in Boston. Rock Spot Climbing has two Boston locations, so whether you live near downtown or in South Boston, you can stop by for some active fun throughout the winter. All Rock Spot Climbing gyms are open from 10 a.m. to midnight every day. Day passes vary between the two Boston locations. They range from $14–$18 for children ages 6 and younger and seniors, $14–$18 for students and military members, and $16–$20 for everyone else. Gear is available to rent for an additional price, and you can also purchase a membership if you plan on climbing frequently throughout the winter. Room Escapers Boston If you want to keep your mind active during the winter, get a group together and head to one of the two Room Escapers locations in Boston. While many escape rooms have you work with your team to get out of a locked room, Room Escapers has you going on missions to break into things instead. You can choose from three themed experiences that will last approximately 60–70 minutes for $30 per person. For available times, check the booking schedule online. Here are a few you can check out. International Museum of World War II With over 7,500 artifacts, letters, and documents on display, the International Museum of World War II is a multi-disciplinary hands-on museum with unique approaches to learning. You'll find yourself growing emotional as you experience the rise of Nazism to the dropping of the atomic bomb from a first-person perspective. You'll see actual documents written by real people of the time period, and you'll learn about the very personal and complex causes and consequences of war. more As with most museums, some exhibits are fixed and others are temporary. Previous exhibits at the International Museum of World War II include the Women in World War II, The Real and Reel Casablanca; American Troops Enter WWII, Landing in North Africa, and The 75th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor: Why We Still Remember. Visit on Friday or Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. WWII vets are free while adults pay $25 and kids' tickets are $15. Eustis Estate Museum Just down the road in Milton, Massachusetts, you'll find the Eustis Estate Museum. This historic site is unique to the Greater Boston area and features a William Ralph Emerson design. This renowned architect set his plans into motion and oversaw the build in 1878. This rare surviving example of late-19th century design is an example of the elaborate architecture and interior design favored by the Eustis family. A guided tour of the house and grounds will teach you about the home and the family, as well as the domestic staff and farmhands. The entry fee is $25 for adults and $8 for children and students. Museum of Fine Arts Boston Another example of art and culture in the Norwood area is the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. This traditional museum experience includes temporary as well as permanent exhibits, talks in the galleries, guided tours, artist demonstrations, drawing, and dancing in the galleries. You can enjoy lectures, studio art classes, film, music, performance art, and kids and family programs.  Current special exhibitions include Toulouse - Lautrec and the Stars of Paris, Frida Kahlo and Arte Popular, Graciela Iturbide's Mexico, and Gender Bending Fashion. The Museum of Fine Arts Boston is open daily with varying hours. Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday you can peruse the galleries from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, the hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The adult entry fee is $25 while kids aged 7-17 are free on weekends and weekdays after 3 p.m. If you're in Norwood for a short time and find yourself looking for some educational and cultured activities, stop into these area museums and get your fix. There are many more ideal locations in the area but these are great places to start.
