The Francis William Bird Park is an 89-acre landscaped reserve in Walpole, Massachusetts, and commissioned in 1925 by the industrialist Charles Sumner Bird, Sr. in memory of his eldest son, Francis William Bird who died of pneumonia at age 37. He wanted a family-friendly space for carefree recreation in beautiful surroundings. The park’s rolling lawns, meandering pathways, and streams are the perfect place for families to enjoy outdoor activities in nature.

1. Meander Through the Park

Take a relaxing stroll on the more than three miles of walking and bicycling paths that wind their way through the park. Wander through green meadows and leafy woodlands, past water features and frog ponds, and across babbling brooks on beautiful stone bridges.

2. Play Tennis or Basketball

Bring a few friends and tennis rackets along and enjoy a game on one of the four well-maintained tennis courts. The park is also a great place to shoot some hoops and have a picnic after all the exhilarating activities.

3. Fun Sled Rides

When there is enough snow on the ground, take a sled ride down the slope next to the stone stage. The park also offers a yearly President’s Day sled ride where the Friends of the Park will be waiting for you with free steaming mugs of hot chocolate!

4. Picnic Under the Trees

Roll out your blanket on the green lawns in the shade of mature trees and have a relaxing afternoon reading or just enjoying the tranquility. Unpack your picnic basket and have a peaceful lunch or sit on one of the benches scattered throughout the park and listen to the songbirds in the trees.

5. Ample Space for Kids to Play

The park’s rolling lawns provide ample space for you and your kids to run, kick a ball, or throw a frisbee. At the Tot Lot, the little ones can have loads of fun in the sun, but there is enough shade around the play area to cool down in. Sit under one of the trees and enjoy the scenery while allowing your kids to burn off some energy.

6. Park Events

The park hosts fun-filled events for everyone throughout the year,
from fun snow days to educational self-guided walks. Here is always something interesting happening. Keep an eye on the events calendar on the park’s website for more information.

7. Volunteer Program

The program allows you to combine your love of the outdoors with service by caring for and preserving the park for the community and future generations. There are different types of volunteer programs you can join to help keep the park in pristine condition. Visit the park’s website for more information on the volunteer programs.

Come to the park and spend some quality time with your family and friends in this beautifully designed space. Roll up your sleeves and volunteer for one of the programs. The park needs all the help it can get to continue to be one of the community’s most beloved places. Visit Jack Madden Ford today and explore a wide range of new and pre-owned Ford vehicles.
