Boston's Best Museums

The city of Boston is full of history and activities for everyone in the family. If you are looking for somewhere to escape the summer heat or spend a rainy day, check out some of Boston’s best museums.

Boston Children’s Museum

Are you looking for somewhere to take the children and let them play while they learn? Make a trip to the Boston Children’s Museum at 300 Congress St. The museum is open seven days a week. It is accessible for everyone, regardless of mobility issues.

During your time at the museum, you’ll enjoy exhibits such as the Science Playground. In this area, children can do experiments with bubbles or raceways. If they enjoy entertaining others, there is a children’s stage next to the Science Playground on the first floor.

The second floor explores the Road to Kindergarten. There is also a special play area for kids under 3. Older children can enjoy learning about different areas of Science Technology Engineering Air and Math in the STEAM gallery. The third floor introduces visitors to Japanese culture at the Japanese House. Kids can also explore the construction industry. There is also an area where they can learn about dinosaurs through a series of questions and problems they must figure out. Once you step outside, you can enjoy a nature walk and a large maze.

An adult must accompany children under 16 at all times. Admission costs $18 for everyone over the age of one. Children under one are free.

Dreamland Wax Museum

Stop by the Dreamland Wax Museum at 1 Washington Mall, right across from the Old State House Museum. While you are there, you can enjoy various figures of celebrities from throughout history. Bring your camera and take a picture with Oprah on her couch. You can also step onto a movie set with Steven Spielberg. Stand next to Michael Jackson or step back in history and take pictures with some of America’s founding fathers. There are over 100 wax figures throughout the property.

Admission to the museum is $25 for adults and $20 for children and it is open seven days a week.

This museum is now, unfortunately, showing as permanently closed as of Apr 2022.

Commonwealth Museum

Are you curious about the history of Massachusetts? Stop by the Commonwealth Museum located at 220 Morrissey Blvd. The museum is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. While you are there, you can learn about the history of the Commonwealth. The exhibits are on two floors that trace the history and culture from 1620 to the present day. Among the artifacts, you’ll find a copy of the Bill of Rights signed by John Adams. There is also a copy of the Declaration of Independence signed by John Hancock. There are also exhibits highlighting the foods of the state.

You can download a cell phone audio tour and enjoy the museum at your own pace. Admission is free.

Don’t forget your cameras and good walking shoes as you explore the museums. Check with the staff of each location about their photography policy when you arrive.
