Trim Levels (Exterior)
The 2023 Ford Explorer comes in eight trims: the base model, XLT, ST-Line, Limited, Timberline, ST, King Ranch, and Platinum. Rear-wheel drive is standard on all trim levels except the all-wheel drive Timberline, but Ford offers optional four-wheel drive on every trim.
Engine (Power)
Powering the lower-end models is a turbocharged 2.3-liter, four-cylinder engine that kicks out 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Step up your game with the ST, King Ranch, and Platinum trims, which boast a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter, six-cylinder engine. This unit pumps out an impressive 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque and can tow up to 5,600 pounds. The Limited and Platinum trims are available in a hybrid drivetrain that has a total output of 318 horsepower and 322 pound-feet of torque.
Performance
If steep prices at the pump are making you second guess purchasing an SUV, the all-new Explorer is worth a second look. The base Ford Explorer engine with rear-wheel drive enjoys 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. Ramping up to four-wheel drive trims just 1 mpg gallon off those numbers. Meanwhile, the six-cylinder engine gets about 18 mpg in the city. On the highway, rear-wheel drive trims get about 26 mpg, while four-wheel drive models get about 24 mpg.
Interior
Comfort is king in the Ford Explorer. The standard three-position, second-row bench configuration seats seven people comfortably or six people if you opt for the second-row captain's chairs. Behind the third row, you get 18.2 cubic feet of cargo space. Fold down the second and third rows for a whopping 87.8 cubic feet of space.
Standard technology includes an 8-inch display infotainment touchscreen, satellite radio, a six-speaker stereo system, two USB ports, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and voice recognition. On higher trim levels, optional technology features include a larger 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless device charging, navigation, HD Radio, two second-row USB ports, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 14-speaker B&O audio system. You can even get multi-contoured, massaging front seats if you choose one of the top-level two trims.
Safety Features
If you're like most drivers, nothing matters more than safety. The Ford Explorer comes with a slew of standard driver-assistance features, including forward collision warning, automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, driver-attention monitoring, rear parking sensors, rearview camera, and more. Other available safety features include a surround-view parking camera system, adaptive cruise control, reverse automatic emergency braking, and park assist, to name a few.
