Exhibits

The Museum of Science has many permanent and temporary exhibits that you explore when you visit. One of their permanent exhibits is A Bird’s World. This exhibit features an astonishing collection of over 300 mounted species of birds found in New England. The exhibit’s interactive activities will teach you how to improve your wildlife observation skills and learn how to recognize different bird behaviors.

You can test how sneaky you are by trying to get past various birds without them alerting other animals to your presence. You’ll also enjoy studying different flight patterns that will help you identify birds from a distance, as well as developing your own flight pattern in the exhibit’s Bird Walk.

The Discovery Center is another fun and permanent exhibit designed for babies and children up to 8 years old. The teaching staff utilizes real objects and tools for each age to teach hands-on science, math, and engineering in a fun and creative way. Kids will enjoy putting together a skeleton, handling real fossils, and studying live animals. The Discovery Center includes an experiment station where various science experiments and engineering challenges are taught.

Thrill Ride 360

The Thrill Ride 360 will take you on a simulated ride with full-motion, 360-degree pitch, roll, and spin technology. You can design your own roller coaster and then enjoy a thrilling ride while traveling at record speed and experiencing a drop of over 100 feet. If you’ve always loved the idea of flying, you’ll love hopping into the pilot’s seat and practicing your takeoff and landing skills and flying over famous landmarks throughout Boston.

IMAX Films

The museums Mugar Omni Theater features the world’s largest film format projected onto a five-story IMAX dome screen. You’ll be surrounded by breathtaking images of fauna, flora, and far-off landscapes. With the top-notch digital sound system, it will feel as though you’re sitting out in the middle of nature rather than in a theater.

A couple of IMAX films that are shown here include Great Bear Rainforest and National Parks Adventure. You’ll travel to the land of grizzly bears, sea otters, and the unique, all-white spirit bear in the Great Bear Rainforest, while National Parks Adventure will take you off-trail and through the world’s most beautiful outdoor and wilderness landscapes.

Butterfly Garden

The museums butterfly garden overlooks the Charles River as you walk through a warm conservatory filled with free-flying butterflies and exotic plants. You can take a look at the emergence box to witness the metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly. If the timing is right, you might even see a brand-new butterfly leaving its casing or a fresh adult pumping fluid into its wings. You’ll also learn about the different stages of a butterfly’s life cycle and the ways a butterfly’s colors and patterns can offer it protection.
